At its simplest, Digital Storytelling involves using digital tools to connect with content ideas or events in order to move others to understand a little bit more. Its purpose is to convey meaning. The use of multiple media allows producers of digital stories to evoke an emotional response in their audience.

Tips for Teachers

  1. Focus on the writing not the technology. Yes it is a great hook but without the storyboarding process including planning, writing, revising and editing, a product can quickly fall flat on its face.
  2. Set deadlines for various steps so that the project does not drag on. Keeping stories short, focused and to the point is helpful.
  3. Teach students how to organize their materials - storyboards, digital images, digital record of citations of images from Copyright friendly sites.
  4. Have students take their own images when possible. When using images from the Internet, teach and reinforce an understanding of various Copyright permissions.
